The Department of Private Law of the Nelson Mandela University will be hosting its twelfth Annual Private Law and Social Justice Conference on 16 and 17 August 2021 via Zoom. The log-in details will be forwarded to delegates and speakers a week before the conference. Registration is free. The registration form can be found at the bottom of this page. Call for papers - closed

The organisers invite academics to submit proposals for papers dealing with social justice issues in line with the conference theme in the following areas:

Family Law
Law of Persons
Customary Law
Consumer Law

Law of Succession
Property law 

Law of Contract
Banking and Finance Law 
IT Law 
Law of Unjustified Enrichment
Law of Delict
Insurance law 
Freedom of expression and hate speech
Intersection between private law and social justice in the Constitutional era.

Proposals for papers are due by 15 JUNE 2021. No late proposals will be accepted. A proposal should include the following:

  • The title of the paper and an abstract of no more than 250 words;
  • Author(s) name(s);
  • Institutional affiliation;
  • Contact details;
  • Three to four keywords;
  • An indication of how the proposal relates to the theme.


The presentation of completed papers may not exceed 20 minutes. Please note that all abstracts will be reviewed. Abstracts must be sent to privatelawgen@mandela.ac.za. Please copy Mr Eugene Christoffels at Eugene.Christoffels@mandela.ac.za
